The next chapter in Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT trilogy, THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG hits theaters next week and the director has release the penultimate production blog for the film, which focuses on the making of the titular dragon, Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). As is the case with all of his production blogs, there's a ton of insight, perspective, hijinks, and teases, all of which make for one of the best (and longest running) production blogs around. I wish more filmmakers would do blogs like this for their films, but alas, I can settle for Jackson's any day of the week.

Check it out:

I've heard from some folks that have seen the sequel that the second chapter is much more "adventurous" and more in line with the tone and feel of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, which should make many of those who felt the first chapter was a bit "light" on that. Personally, I loved THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, mostly because my expectations were very low, so I'm going into this one with a little more optimism (and raised expectations as a result). Either way we're going to have a dragon with the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch and the sexiest bad ass elf (Evangeline Lilly's Tauriel) since Legolas.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG hits theaters on December 13, 2013.
