Charlie Hunnam spars with Rinko Kikuchi in the latest clip from Pacific Rim

Guillermo Del Toro may not be worried about the box office predictions for PACIFIC RIM, but I am sure Warner Bros is. Aside from announcing a screening in Long Beach, CA that will be attended by Del Toro, the marketing push for the movie has been fairly standard. With just a couple of weeks until release, we are beginning to get the barrage of clips and featurettes for the film.

After yesterday’s dialogue-filled Idris Elba clip, today’s is a lot more action. While that action does not feature any monsters or robots, it is pretty impressive nonetheless. The clip showcases Charlie Hunnam‘s character Raleigh Becket sparring with Rinko Kikuchi‘s Mako Mori as Elba looks on. The Asian influence is clear as the two fight using staffs. The test is really to see if the two can work in unison to pilot the Jaegers. See what happens.

Hunnam is a very likeable actor who does a great job on FX’s biker series SONS OF ANARCHY. This could be his breakout role in movies, but with a cast of actors unknown to mainstream audiences, this could also be PACIFIC RIM’s downfall.

I am glad they are keeping the footage of the monster vs robot action limited to the trailers. If those are truly the centerpiece of the film, don’t ruin their scope by showing too much in the trailers. Unlike TRANSFORMERS, I feel there is a lot more humanity to these robots since they are piloted by people. It is all large scale CGI, but it feels more, I don’t know, real.

PACIFIC RIM opens everywhere on July 12, 2013.
