Walden Media and Jennifer Lopez are still attached to the long in development movie version of WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CARMEN SANDIEGO? The film now has a screenwriter to turn the educational video game into a viable movie.

Darren Lemke will be penning the screenplay for the film which Walden Media hopes will be a cross between NATIONAL TREASURE and THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, but for family audiences. Lemke wrote the awful SHREK FOREVER AFTER and the upcoming JACK THE GIANT KILLER for director Bryan Singer.

Plot: The story of the geographically-inclined game centers on Carmen Sandiego, the greatest detective at the ACME agency. When she becomes the world’s greatest thief, it’s up to her former partner to follow her clues and track her down. But when their cat and mouse game leads to a bigger mystery that implicates the agency itself, the partner questions whether Carmen is a really a thief — or a hero.

The Carmen Sandiego video game franchise has yielded several different versions, some that include time travel elements. This could become an interesting movie if developed with less of the cheesy puns the video game became known for. While Lopez is producing and considering the film as a starring vehicle, no firm cast members have been announced.
