The Last Photograph: Zack Snyder’s gritty drama gets a first look teaser

While there’s a lot of interest in Zack Snyder’s upcoming projects, which are said to include a remake of Escape from New York, the director is deep in post-production on a film that marks a stark departure from his usual fare. The Last Photograph reunites the director with two of his Rebel Moon stars, Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, but don’t expect any intergalactic mayhem or superheroes in this one, with it being a grounded action thriller Snyder is shooting independently. You can take a look at the teaser trailer embedded above, which contains a warning for its violent imagery, with it opening on a disturbing shot of a dead dog.

Here’s the movie’s logline:

An ex-DEA operative searches the South American mountains for his missing niece and nephew after their parents are murdered. With the help of a war photographer who witnessed the killers, he confronts his past as their journey blurs the line between reality and the surreal.

The film, which is written by Kurt Johnstad (300), has long been a passion project for Snyder, who has been developing it since the 2000’s. In 2011, Christian Bale and Sean Penn were once attached as the stars. As a fan of Snyder’s, I’m all for him exploring edgier territory. He has resources available to him that few directors have, with him and his wife, Deborah Snyder, serving as the film’s producers as well. He has years of experience making huge films, and a dark, grounded flick like this could be just the change of pace he needs after his two-part epic, Rebel Moon, earned poor reviews and a mixed reaction from fans. Zack Snyder is serving as his own DP this time, and the trailer is full of moody, intense images, as well as a hard-driving score, with none other than Hans Zimmer involved in its composition.

No news yet on when we might see The Last Photograph. I was hoping it would make its way to TIFF this year, but it didn’t happen. It had been rumoured to be going to Cannes before that, but maybe he’s going to wait and debut it at either Sundance or SXSW in the spring, assuming he even goes the festival route.
