Lionsgate has picked up Reno 911! creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon’s heist comedy script ACTION NO. 1. The film is a fictional account of how a group of nerds attempted to steal Nicolas Cage’s copy of Action Comics No. 1, the 1938 comic book, which introduced Superman to the world.
Cage’s actual copy of the comic was stolen in 2000 and was “lost” until 2011 when it was discovered in an abandoned storage locker and sold at auction for $2.1 million.
The role of Nicolas Cage was written specifically for the actor in the script, but it’s unclear if Cage will actually play himself in the film. The only rumored name that’s surfaced for the project is Jason Statham in an undisclosed role (although this has been refuted).
I love Lennon and Garant’s work on Reno 911! and find their involvement in this project to be the key selling point. To have Nicolas Cage play himself in the film would just be icing on the cake. Shit, to have Statham play Cage would be epic! Either way, this is a project that has a lot of potential. Just imagine Cage having a “Nic Cage” moment when he discovers his copy of Action Comics No. 1 is missing…Oh, the possibilities…
