Producer Joel Silver is hoping to have learned from his SPEED RACER mistakes and is again jumping into the fray of animated-to-live-action films with an adaptation of the popular Cartoon Network series BEN 10, hiring screenwriter Albert Torres, who recently did some work on the now dead-in-the-water AKIRA adaptation.
Ben 10 is about a boy named Ben Tennyson, who acquires a watch-like alien device called the Omnitrix (later the Ultimatrix) that allows him to turn into one of ten different alien creatures (hence, the “10” in Ben 10).
Cartoon Network has already produced two live-action adaptations that aired on the network, as well as a number of animated features. The show itself has had a number of iterations, effectively flooding the market at this point, having first aired in 2005.
It’s a smart move to adapt the property with such a large built-in audience. However, let’s hope that Silver and Torres remember that it has to, like, not suck as well.
