After a month-long bidding war, Sony Pictures has emerged victorious, securing the movie rights to the popular Ubisoft video game “Assassin’s Creed.”
Universal had been competing with Sony for the rights but Ubisoft eventually went with Sony because they were allowing the developer to maintain some creative control throughout the film’s development. In May, the company launched Ubisoft Motion Pictures to facilitate the adaptation of its many games into films. (They recently signed a deal with Nickelodeon to develop a “Raving Rabbids” animated TV series.)
So far there have been three “Assassin’s Creed” games released with a fourth, “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations” set for release this November.
I’ll be honest and admit that I’ve never played any of the games in the series and my attempts to catch up on the plot has left me a little flummoxed. Apparently you’re actually a 2012 barkeep named Desmond but you play as master assassins Altair or Ezio, as Desmond experiences their memories through modern-day Knights Templar and forced to use the Animus to discover the location of the Pieces of Eden and….I’m confused. But it seems like a very fun game!
For those who have played it, is it worth picking up the new installment next month? And do you think it will adapt well to a movie or will it be more PRINCE OF PERSIA crap?
