Director David Fincher (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) has always been one to make surprisingly heavy use of CG special effects in his films, though always in unobtrusive and often seamless ways.
In speaking recently at the Swedish Film Institute for an Actors Studio Q&A, the filmmaker discussed motion capture (a hot topic these days thanks to its incredible use in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) and the possibility of creating a film using the technology. In the process, Fincher revealed that his next film, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, will likely rely very extensively on computer graphics:
“I would love to to something like that. I would love to do something probably more like Avatar than Tintin. I like the idea of something that is a little more… complicated [laughs]. I love the idea of a ‘cartoon’, but I would like it to be sort of very, very dense. And, in fact, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will be probably 70% CG. I love motion capture and think it’s only in its infancy, and eventually there won’t be a difference between motion capture and acting. because that’s all motion capture is, is being able to capture acting.”
Will 20,000 LEAGUES become Fincher’s AVATAR? It’s interesting to consider just what an auteur filmmaker like this will be able to bring to the table using all the latest technology. After seeing such progression in just what they can do with character now in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, it’s frankly very exciting.
