A new Nutcracker’s coming to town, one chalk full of ACTION and EXPLOSIONS.

Alas, that’s actually not true. But Universal has just picked up the rights to a new version of THE NUTCRACKER, headed by John Mann (MAGIC 8 BALL) and Jon Gunn and produced by RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES guys Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark.

The film, a live-action adventure take on the classic tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, “centers on a 12-year-old girl who, with her brother and sister, receive gifts from their clockmaker-inventor godfather on Christmas Eve, one of which is a Nutcracker doll. That night, the girl begins an adventure that includes a war involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his army of mice, curses and themes of ugliness and beauty.”

This is actually the second Nutcracker film that’s in development in Hollywood. The other is at New Line from Temple Hill Entertainment, the same group behind THE TWILIGHT SAGA. I’m not sure which is worse – a Nutcracker movie involving TWILIGHT people, or a Nutcracker from the guy tasked with writing that f*cking MAGIC 8 BALL flick.
