A director is found for the Percy Jackson sequel we’re not sure anyone wants

Fox once had hopes that PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF could serve as a new HARRY POTTER of sorts for their studio; the heir apparent to the mega-franchise that was winding down at Warner Bros. But the film, like POTTER adapted from a popular fantasy book series, never really gained much traction at the box-office ($88 million in the US). But Fox isn’t giving up hope and has hired Thor Freudenthal (DIARY OF A WIMPY KID) to direct a sequel.

Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are currently writing a draft based on the second book in the series, “The Sea of Monsters.” But with a director and a script in the works, Fox cautions that the film hasn’t been greenlit and they haven’t even exercised their option on star Logan Lerman.

While PERCY never caught on in the US, it did make over $135 million internationally, which could be enough to justify a sequel. But will fans be turned off by the tepid first film or be excited to see where the latest sequel goes?
