The Avengers fighting the Skrull? Not so fast…

JoBloJoBlo

Back in 2009, CHUD’s then writer Devin Faraci reported from Comic-Con that he believed the villain in THE AVENGERS would not be Hulk, as had been widely rumored, but instead The Skrulls. Marvel owns the cinematic rights to the Skrull race (though Fox owns Super Skrull for its FANTASTIC FOUR movies) and the rumor has been that they’d be the antagonists in THE AVENGERS.

Flash forward to earlier this week when the Albuquerque Journal ran an article about THE AVENGERS filming in New Mexico and included this line at the end: “The Avengers battle with two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree.”

There was some initial speculation that the newspaper included that line based on some intel received from pre-production sources in New Mexico and that the initial report was accurate. But Superhero Hype contacted Marvel who confirmed that the aforementioned line was simply “a research error” on the part of the paper.

It’s possible at one time the Skrull were being talked about as villains for the film but CHUD’s initial report came before Joss Whedon had signed on to write and direct the film and it’s highly possible he’s taking the film in a new direction.
