There’s no doubt about it – Y: THE LAST MAN is stuck in development hell. New Line optioned Brian K. Vaughan’s epic comic series and had originally set DJ Caruso to adapt the film for his then-DISTURBIA star Shia LaBeouf. But that was a good four years ago and little progress has been made since.
Caruso appears to have moved on (he recently said he’s only “loosely” involved with the development) but another director has come forward with an idea to jumpstart the project. CLASH OF THE TITANS director Louis Leterrier would actually like to skip theaters altogether and bring the project to HBO.
He’s not formally attached to the project but is trying to convince New Line and parent company Warner Bros. to let him run with an ambitious idea. “[It wouldn’t work as] one large film, no. I’d love to do it as a TV show or a three-part series.”
As Lebowski would say, “That’s f*cking interesting man…” The problem always seemed to stem from the difficulty in adapting Vaughan’s work, which spanned five years and 60 issues, into one two-hour movie. Says Leterrier of TV, “You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don’t need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies.”
The unfortunate thing is that “the people financing it don’t know if it’s a TV show a movie, or what it should be,” explains Leterrier. I love the idea of a series on HBO and hopefully it’s something Leterrier can convince New Line/WB to work with sister company HBO on finally bringing the story to life.
