Quentin Tarantino rescues LA’s New Beverly Theater

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino loves cinema so much that now he owns one.

The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles is a beloved repertory revival house, where Tarantino spent countless hours absorbing classic and grindhouse films. When the theater recently fell on troubled times, QT swooped in like a savior and snatched the cinema from the clutches of SuperCuts.

I’d been coming to the New Beverly ever since I was old enough to drive there from the South Bay — since about 1982,” Tarantino says. “So, I couldn’t let that happen. I always considered the New Beverly my charity — an investment I never wanted back. I already had a good relationship with the family and the theater, so it was a natural step.”

Tarantino, who held the INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS DVD premiere at the theater, will have the existing staff continue to book films, but will make occasional suggestions (the cinema is also known for letting well-known guests like Jason Reitman and Edgar Wright make special programming).

QT had already been paying the $5k monthly rent for a while before stepping up and making it his very own. And while the facility will get a few renovations (lights, seats, digital projection), not much else will change. As Tarantino says, “As long as I’m alive, and as long as I’m rich, the New Beverly will be there, showing double features in 35mm.
