Director Ed Zwick has dealt with the Civil War, WWII, ninjas and sanguine jewelry. Time for… a killer whale!
Zwick (BLOOD DIAMOND, DEFIANCE) will take to the crow’s nest for IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, which he adapted from Nathaniel Philbrick’s bestselling book. Set in the year 1820, the story is sort of a cross between “Moby Dick” and ALIVE.
The waterlogged tale is the grisly-yet-captivating account of the whaleship Essex, a vessel that found itself attacked by a massive, belligerent sperm whale. Lost and drifting in lifeboats, the survivors eventually turned to cannibalism in order to persevere. At least they had plenty of salt.
A film based on the book has been in the works since 2000, and the story, rumored to be the basis of Melville’s classic book “Moby Dick”.
