When the live-action HALO movie got stuffed back into Master Chief’s locker, that project’s intended director Neill Blomkamp moved on to a secretive movie called DISTRICT 9. The sci-fi project was announced with Peter Jackson producing and WETA providing FX, and commercial director/3D animator Blomkamp making his feature debut, but no further details were offered.
But now we can postulate thanks to the increasingly popular viral campaign game. Judging from the sites that have popped up, the film seems like some combination of ALIEN NATION and Blomkamp’s own short film ALIVE IN JOBURG, with humans and extraterrestrials living together not quite harmoniously, and a large corporation as the apparent source of the strife.
The movie isn’t due until August 2009, so we have a long time for conjecture. Check out the sites below and start working on the puzzle. Maybe it’ll actually have more to do with the eventual movie than all that CLOVERFIELD viral stuff.
