Day-Lewis counts Nine?

Rob Marshall’s all-star musical NINE lost one recent Oscar-winner… but is it gaining another?

Though not officially confirmed, word is that Daniel Day-Lewis will ditch the ‘stache and flat-brimmed hat and two-step in as a replacement for the departed Javier Bardem (who left because he was “exhausted from work and awards season”, whatever that translates to in Hollywood speak). DDL would play (somewhat) fictional film director Guido Contini, who struggles with his career and a bunch of ladies.

Those ladies are Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench, so the movie could very well be a magnet for more Oscars — Marshall’s last A-list stage-to-movie musical CHICAGO won quite a few. The movie is based on the Broadway musical, itself an update of Fellini’s 8 1/2, except point-five more awesome.
