Judging from the trailer, CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR is about the secret machinations of war, the chronic tension in the Middle East, and how a Southern politician brought everlasting peace to the region. Naturally, it’s a comedy. Because when you think of Afghanistan, you want to chuckle (on Christmas)! Or is it an Important Movie, because it has Oscar-winning actors front and center?
I really have no idea what to make of this movie, or the tone this trailer clumsily tries to convey. But it’s nearly impossible to dislike Tom Hanks (well, maybe for THE DA VINCI CODE), anything with Philip Seymour Hoffman gets the benefit of the doubt (including MY BOYFRIEND’S BACK), and veteran director Mike Nichols has previously handled politics and war (PRIMARY COLORS and CATCH-22, one of my all-time favorite films). Decide for yourself by clicking Tom’s puffy mug.
