INT: Michael Caine

Every now and again, a prominent superstar will come along whose presence will make me shift uneasily in my seat. That is pretty much how I felt when meeting the legendary British actor Sir Michael Caine. After all, we are talking about a famous, talented, multiple academy award-winning icon, whose perseverance broke ‘accent’ barriers while catapulting him to stardom. He has graced the silver screens in numerous classics such as THE IPCRESS FILE, ALFIE, THE ITALIAN JOB, PULP, DRESSED TO KILL, DEATHTRAP, THE HAND, EDUCATING RITA AND BLAME IT ON RIO to name a few. Adapted from the original 1972 film in which he originally starred opposite Laurence Olivier, Caine switches roles in a fresh version of SLEUTH to go face to face with Jude Law and fight for the woman he loves.

While Caine steps into Olivier’s old shoes as the powerful, dangerous mystery writer Andrew Wyke, Law takes on Caine’s former role as the charming hairstylist Milo Tindle who is sleeping with Wyke’s wife. Consequentially and primitively, the men engage in a clever yet fatal mind game of chess. Exuding prestige, wisdom, and sophistication, I felt legitimately star-struck by Caine last week when I chatted with him at NYC’s Regency Hotel. While confessing his inclination for Harold Pinter’s modern script and the joys of working with director Kenneth Branagh, he asserted that SLEUTH is NOT a remake of the original. Check out what he had to say about the gripping thriller.
