New Near Dark director

Kathryn Bigelow’s low-budget 1987 film NEAR DARK was an influential vampire movie, a stylish and violent portrayal of seduction, equal parts Western and horrifying road movie. Time for a remake!

Past time, actually — Michael Bay’s company Platinum Dunes has planned it for a couple of years, but now has a creative team in place: music video director Sam Bayer (Green Day, Nirvana, Metallica, etc.) will shoot a fresh script from DISTURBIA guy Christopher Landon. Platinum Dunes hit a pothole on Remake Road with THE HITCHER, but they’re staying on course, again joining with genre studio Rogue Pictures for this update (THE BIRDS and FRIDAY THE 13th are also on the Dunes redo docket).

The original flick starred flying HEROES politician Adrian Pasdar as a farmboy named Caleb who falls in love with a traveling vampire. Once she sinks her fangs into him, he’s drawn into her world and becomes part of her “family”, which includes the reunited ALIENS triumvirate of Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein and Bill Paxton (who hates it when they ain’t been shaved). After spending a bit of quality time with the roving band of bloodsuckers, Caleb quickly realizes maybe the vampire lifestyle isn’t for him.
