From Stomp to Static

Director Sylvain White obviously pleased a few important deep-pocketed people with his modestly budgeted hit STOMP THE YARD — he’s making a quantum leap from street dancing to sci-fi action.

White will take the reins on Sony’s STATIC, a futuristic tale about a gang leader being transported through a gauntlet of rival street thugs and corrupt cops. Sounds a little like SWAT, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since it’ll be produced by Neal Moritz, whose sole mission is to bludgeon brains with IQ-punishing works like STEALTH and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. White, however, describes it as an “exciting opportunity to paint an innovative near-future youthful reality within a high action-packed framework.” If you say so, man. I’m still recovering from XXX: STATE OF THE UNION.

White is also attached to an adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel RONIN, about a samurai reincarnated in a dystopian New York.
