Back in May we learned that William Peter Blatty and William Friedkin were working on some sort of “Exorcist” television series. Now that seemed like intriguing news, right? Well it was. Right up until a few days later when Blatty said that information was ‘utterly false,’ though he and Friedkin did apparently have a new mini-series remake script in the works.
Now here we are, a month later, and we’ve got the man himself William Friedkin giving us an update on this project. What did the director have to say about the miniseries? Check it:
“No there isn’t. The guys who put that out don’t have the rights to do it. I think it would be a load of bollocks that would be too much to take. I think it would be completely unbelievable. You know, very little is understood about exorcism. And in the 20th Century, the Catholic Church and the United States had three cases of what they considered ‘demonic possession and exorcism.’ In the entire 20th Century of America. So if some bloke wants to put them on television one a week or something, they’d be laughed off the air.”
“To have to put up with this crap on television every week would be too much to bear.”
That comes courtesy of HeyUGuys.co.uk, who recently had a chance to chat with Friedkin regarding his dark comedy KILLER JOE. The director even goes on to talk about how ‘ridiculous’ all the EXORCIST sequels were. To check that out head right over HERE.
So from the looks of it Mr. Friedkin has absolutely no interest in bringing his beloved EXORCIST to the small screen. In my eyes that’s a good thing. Leave the classic flick alone for what it is.
