That headline you’ve just dropped your jaw over doesn’t have any typos or misinformation in it. Clive Barker will be rewriting GLADIATORS VS. ZOMBIES, a project we first heard about back in 2010, for Amazon Studios. (As in Amazon.com.)

The plot: A shaman about to die in the Coliseum casts a spell that rouses history’s first wave of zombies. It’s up to a gladiator to stop the spread of the zombie horde and save Rome.

Lest you think this is some poor attempt at a joke, Barker had this to say about the project: “I’m excited by the opportunity to interweave two very rich narrative threads. One of them concerns itself with the reality of the decadence of Rome and its rise and fall. The other is a fantastical narrative element – the living dead. My brief to myself on this project is to give the audience not only zombies they have never seen before but also a Rome they have never seen before.”

Launched in November of 2010, Amazon Studios has accepted more than 9,000 movie scripts and 1,000 series pilot scripts. Sixteen film projects are currently in development.

I suppose we should be grateful to have Mr. Barker back in the movie-writing game no matter what the project. Still, GLADIATORS VS. ZOMBIES seems a little lowbrow for an artist such as Clive, no?
