Rejoice, all ye fans of bloody gore and violence, as today is a day without PG-13 horror! At least, as far as four upcoming releases are concerned. Yes, the braintrusts at the MPAA have dished out some new ratings; and while three of them were to be expected, the fourth one is a slight surprise.

First up, the new UNDERWORLD flick, AWAKENING. As all of the previous films in this series have received R ratings, this one was a shoe-in for the same. The Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein-directed sequel gets an R for strong violence and gore, and for some language. No nudity or even “some” sexuality? Shit.

Next is Joe Carnahan’s killer wolf epic THE GREY, starring Liam Neeson. This one gets slapped with an R for violence/disturbing content including bloody images, and for pervasive language.

James McTeigue’s THE RAVEN is in the same boat, for bloody violence and grisly images. Couldn’t have a movie inspired by Edgar Allan Poe contain anything less…

Finally we have THE DEVIL INSIDE, Paramount’s upcoming micro-budget demonic-possession thriller. I figured this one had a strong chance of getting a PG-13 in order to nab some extra cash from the teens, but it too finds itself Restricted, for disturbing violent content and grisly images, and for language including some sexual references. The devil sure knows how to throw a party!
