Over a month ago we looked upon the startling news that David Cronenberg had written a follow-up to his 1986 sci-fi horror classic THE FLY, news which certainly galvanized the fanboy community; we’re always suspicious (or just short of apoplectic) when we hear about unnecessary sequels/reboots, but this one was different. This was Cronenberg returning to what may be his defining work, and I’m positive that most of us would be curious to discover what that would look like…

Keep on dreaming, folks, because it doesn’t look like it’s happening.

IndieWire caught up with the director during his press rounds for A DANGEROUS METHOD and astutely asked about the sequel’s status. Cronenberg’s response: “I wrote a script and at the moment Fox is not wanting to do the project.”

“At the moment” might leave you with a glimmer of hope, but it’s likely that Cronenberg will simply move on to other things (he’s got EASTERN PROMISES 2 possibly lined up next).

As for Fox, they’ve got ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 3 and ICE AGE 4 to focus on…
