Samantha Morton (MINORITY REPORT) has been attached to THE MULO, a spooky supernatural romp revolving around am evil gypsy spirit. The film is set to be directed by Matthew Thompson (DUMMY) and produced by Ipso Facto Films (VALHALLA RISING).

Things get a bit confusing when looking at the synopsis. As Screen Daily has it, Morton will play estranged twin sisters Brady and Bess. The story kicks off when Brady’s little boy goes missing and the desperate mother quests to find her son who may have been taken by an evil gypsy spirit.

However, when you look at the production company Ipsco Facto Films’ official site, they tell a totally different tale: The Mulo is a creature of gypsy folk lore – an evil, undead spirit reputed to cause death and mayhem amongst the living. It’s a story that few believe in, least of all our hero, JOE CLAY.

That begins to change when a misguided attempt to earn some cash leads to Joe’s wife being kidnapped, forcing him to spend a long night alone searching an ancient, haunted forest. Still grieving for the son they lost two years before, Joe comes across a crazy old gypsy psychic, who convinces him the ghost of his son holds the answers to all his problems. The catch is that to find out for sure, Joe must take a concoction of herbs and roots that the old gypsy claims will make ghosts visible – and enable them to see him. But when Joe takes the plunge, he is soon confronted by the terrifying truth that the old gypsy is not quite what he seems, there is evil in the forest, and that the Mulo is far more than a legend…

Well, the gypsy angle is intact, but almost everything else seems different. We’ll have to wait and see just which synopsis is the accurate one when THE MULO goes into production. The project was just being shopped at AFM.
