It wasn’t too long ago that the world was bummed out to hear that Universal had passed on the epic THE DARK TOWER saga, thanks to it’s budget skyrocketing. Well soon after that we heard from Brian Grazer that they weren’t giving up anytime soon! The script is being retooled to help lower the budget and the project’s mini-series is still in line to land at HBO. Now we’ve got word that Grazer isn’t the only one ready to roll…
Ron Howard recently chatted it up with The Hollywood Reporter about his upcoming Formula One movie RUSH but the subject quickly changed to THE DARK TOWER. Want to know what Howard feels about all this shite? Check it:
“We are continuing to work on the script to find ways to make the budget more manageable and still deliver the work in a way that the project deserves. We were always racing and fast-tracking the project, so I always wince when I see something written about it and there’s a release date in there. These kinds of projects often take years to come together in the right ways. But I am in love with the material, and the minute it can come together in the right way, I am fully committed to it.”
So as soon as everything is in place Howard is ready to roll! Sounds good to me. Don’t you love it when a situation hits rock bottom but then starts building up once again? Here’s hoping this actually pans out… Especially considering Howard hinted that the mention of a release date seems a ways off.
In the story, Roland Deschain is the last living member of a knightly order known as gunslingers and the last of the line of “Arthur Eld”, his world’s analogue of King Arthur. Politically organized along the lines of a feudal society, it shares technological and social characteristics with the American Old West but is also magical. Many of the magical aspects have vanished from Mid-World, but traces remain as do relics from a technologically advanced society. Roland’s quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to be the nexus of all universes. Roland’s world is said to have “moved on”, and it appears to be coming apart at the seams. Mighty nations have been torn apart by war, entire cities and regions vanish without a trace and time does not flow in an orderly fashion. Sometimes, even the sun rises in the north and sets in the east. As the series opens, Roland’s motives, goals and age are unclear, though later installments shed light on these mysteries.
As always any other DARK TOWER news that floats our way will surely be hitting these pages so check back soon for more as we hear it.
