It has always seemed to me that The Punisher should be a relatively easy character to bring to cinematic life. The silver screen has a long tradition of take-no-prisoners vigilantes, and you’d think that the wildly violent adventures of Frank Castle would be a perfect fit for the movies… But, so far, no dice. Three PUNISHER flicks have been made, and not one of them got the character – or his world – right. (Although you could argue that each film has a moment or two of inspired chaos.) Maybe Mr. Castle is better suited for… television? Looks like we’re going to find out.
Deadline.com is reporting that Fox has given a pilot commitment to a “Punisher” television series. Said series is being produced by ABC Studios and will be overseen by TV veteran Ed Bernero (“Criminal Minds”, “Third Watch”). Marvel is also executive producing.
This iteration of “The Punisher” is described as an hour-long procedural with a Marvel signature and a new take on one of the comic book giant’s iconic characters, Frank Castle, a rising star detective with the New York Police Department who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher, seeking justice for those the system has failed.
Hmm. That sort of sounds off right away. Cue the fanboy outrage!
No word on when “The Punisher” will get underway, but you can believe we’ll be following along attentively. (Perhaps putting it on Fox’s FX Network, alongside more progressive, explicit shows like “Sons of Anarchy” and “American Horror Story”, is the way to go?)
