Stephen King’s Under the Dome to become Showtime series

As far as ambitious adaptations of Stephen King projects, let’s hope this one fares better than THE DARK TOWER.

According to Deadline.com, Showtime is partnering with Steven Spielberg and Stephen King to bring the latter’s massive tome “Under the Dome” to the small screen. The rights to the book were picked up by Spielberg and Dreamworks Television back in 2009; now it’s finally getting underway with the pay cable channel that airs “Dexter”, “Weeds” and “The United States of Tara” (which Spielberg executive produces).

Further details are scant; no word on how many episodes this thing will get, or when they hope to bring it before cameras. This is the second such genre-skewing material the channel has embarked on in recent days: It was announced last week that the network will make a series based on the graphic novel series “The Damned”, about a city overrun by mobsters and demons.

The synopsis for the book (which is an astounding 1074 pages long): On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Deadline notes that no writer is attached yet, although back in May we heard that GREEN LANTERN scribe Michael Green was toiling over the material. It’s unclear if he’s just no longer at work on the project, or if Deadline missed that bit of info.

Once more people become attached to “Under the Dome”, we’ll let you know!
