Trademark Films, the production company behind the upcoming drama MY WEEK WITH MARILYN (starring Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe), has just acquired the rights to THE HAUNTING OF ALAZIABEL CRAY, a horror fantasy that’s set in a fictionalized, demon-populated version of Victorian London.

Based on a young adult novel (of course) written by Chris Wooding,
The Haunting Of Alaizabel Cray is a Gothic horror/fantasy about an alternate Victorian London overrun by the wych-kin, daemonic creatures that have rendered the city uninhabitable south of the river, and which stalk the streets after dark. When Thaniel Fox, a young wych-hunter, finds a mad girl wandering the streets in the middle of the night, he is moved by pity to take her home; and in doing so, he becomes embroiled in a plot that reaches into the highest levels of government, and into the darkest depths of the wych-kin’s world.

Trademark Films producer Ivan Mactaggart says the tale “inhabits a world somewhere between Harry Potter and Underworld. There are two beautiful young things at the heart of it, and it has real franchise potential.”

“Two beautiful young things”? Was this guy sipping lasciviously on a glass of bourbon with a naughty twinkle in his eye when he said that?

Creepy producer or not, the project seems ambitious and intriguing, although you never really know based on the plots of these young adult fantasy books. So many of them sound engaging right up until the part where you discover there’s going to be yet another groan-inducing romance at the center of it all.
