And the potential MALEFICENT suitors continue to pile up…
I believe it was just last week that we heard David O. Russell was circling the chance to direct Angelina Jolie in the big-screen adaptation of MALEFICENT. Now, ever the Disney enthusiast, Guillermo del Toro has expressed interest in helming the dark reimagining.
Here’s what the ultra-busy Mexican visionary told the L.A. Times:
“Let me put it this way, if they ask I’ll take the meeting…I think Maleficent’s dragon is the only design with the wings separate from the front legs, the only time that design has ever worked. And let me tell you how much of a fan I am. I have a collection of over two or three dozen Maleficent figures, some of them four or five feet tall. I own about 10 pieces of conceptual art from ‘Sleeping Beauty’ that include the dragon and a lot more pieces that are just from ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ It’s one of my three favorite Disney films. I would love to. But I don’t want to put too many hopes on it. They’re probably on a fast track and I cannot take any more projects on a fast track.“
Okay so “I’d love to” doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll happen. Still, I’d rather see del Toro’s version of MALEFICENT over O. Russell’s. Who’s with me?
Of course, del Toro is hard at work on PACIFIC RIM, which he’s currently casting up. Since the dude takes years between pictures (directorially), I doubt he’d have time to invest in MALEFICENT even if it wasn’t fast-tracked. Still, to see the man express such interest is always a refreshing sight.
