Back in August of last year, we brought you a quote from Guillermo del Toro regarding HELLBOY 3; the director basically put the onus of a third HELLBOY film on star Ron Perlman, who is A) on a hit TV show (“Sons of Anarchy”), and B) perhaps no longer thrilled to spend six hours a day in the make-up chair. Still, del Toro has always seemed up for making another one.
But the likelihood of second sequel is pretty slim; we all know this, and even Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, recognizes it. In an interview with the Daily Blam, Mignola mentions (seemingly not without some bitterness) that del Toro’s always-crowded plate has left precious little room for more Big Red adventures.
“Last I heard he said he would not make it. Guillermo — who I love — in every interview there’s a new story on what his next movie is and he honestly believes he’s going to do all these things. But last I heard, he said ‘I’m never gonna get back to Hellboy. I’m not surprised because he won’t live long enough to do a tenth of the movies he’s told me he’s going to make.
“I can’t imagine him (Del Toro) making a Hellboy 3. He’s very enthusiastic and says he’s going to do all these things….ummm….he’s cute [laughed].
Mignola obviously knows Guillermo well…
HELLBOY II, while appreciated by many, only made $160 million worldwide. For a movie with a reported budget in the $85 million range, that’s just not enough to justify going back to the well. And now that del Toro has PACIFIC RIM on deck and a bevy of other projects in development, it’s probably a safe bet that HELLBOY 3 will never get made…
