The U.K.’s Vertigo Films has announced that they will be producing a sequel to last year’s MONSTERS. The independent British flick received praise for its dramatic take on the genre with an impressively low budget. Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas, a duo who has recently worked on commercials, will helm the follow-up.
The sequel will take place in a walled city with two brothers finding each other in a world of monsters. The variety of aliens will differ this time around. The film will shoot in September in a foreign location, perhaps Argentina, with a budget of under $5 million. (The first was made for under $1 million.)
Original director Gareth Edwards and star Scoot McNairy will serve as executive producers alongside Vertigo’s Rupert Preston. Allan Niblo, James Richardson, Ben Pugh and Rory Aitke will produce. Protagonist is handling the international sales rights.
Niblo reveals that the sequel will be more of a genre flick with action: “We’re going to keep the same quality and intelligence of the first film and make it much more of a straight genre picture. MONSTERS 2 will expand the world created in the original movie whilst upping the action ante.”
