You can expect a flurry of news coming from the Cannes Film Festival these next few days, so let’s get it started. (Actually, it started some days ago, so let’s just keep it going.) Actress/director Katie Aselton is prepping a “girl-based thriller” called BLACK ROCK. Flick will star Aselton, Lake Bell, Kate Bosworth, Jay Paulson, Anslem Richardson and Will Bouvier.

The film follows what happens when three childhood friends meet for a weekend getaway on an isolated island and discover that they have company.

Aselton previously directed the comedy THE FREEBIE; she’s also a regular on FX’s comedy series “The League”. Aselton’s husband and co-star on “The League”, Mark Duplass, wrote the screenplay. (Duplass co-wrote/directed the pseudo-thriller BAGHEAD.)

“I grew up watching classic suspense films and have long had the idea of making a girl-based thriller where the threat to the characters is very real, and the audience is left with the terrifying thought “this could happen to me,'” said Aselton.

BLACK ROCK has a tiny budget of approximately $20,000, which it’s close to reaching. It’ll be a presence at Marche de Cannes.
