Summer movie season must officially be here, because it was a quiet week for the genre. While THOR swung his mighty hammer for a #1 opening, not a single genre movie was found in the Top 10. This will be a quick update, likely the first of many in the upcoming months since the genre usually settles down until the fall.
James Wan’s INSIDIOUS was once again the highest ranked horror film, coming it at #11 with $1.3 million. Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE was right behind it at #12 with $1.2 million. Both films have now crossed the $50 million mark. That’s particularly impressive for INSIDIOUS, which was made for a mere $1.5 million. It has also officially out-grossed Wes Craven’s SCREAM 4, which came in at #15 with $702,000.
Nothing else charted in the Top 20, which is pretty sad. Next week, we’ll see how Scott Charles Stewart’s PRIEST fares. Philip Gelatt’s THE BLEEDING HOUSE and Yuen Woo Ping’s TRUE LEGEND will also receive limited openings.
