Despite there being four major releases opening in theaters this past weekend, none of them were genre-related. However, that didn’t stop horror fans from going to the movies. James Wan’s INSIDIOUS, which opened at #3 last week, claimed the #5 spot with $9.7 million. That might not seem like a big deal, with but it had the lowest drop off of any film in the Top 10 with only 27%, a damn good rate for a horror flick.
Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE did not hold up so well; it experienced a 39% drop, falling to #7 from #2 with $9.1 million. Neil Burger’s LIMITLESS nabbed the #8 spot with $5.7 million. Zach Snyder’s SUCKER PUNCH is already out of the Top 10, hitting the #12 spot with $2.1 million in its third week.
Greg Mottola’s PAUL continued its descent, making $1.8 million at #13. Jonathan Liebesman’s BATTLE: LOS ANGELES was right behind it at #14 with $1.6 million. George Nolfi’s THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU took in $904,000 at $17, while Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD made $540,000 at #21.
This weekend may not have had much to offer for horror fans, but next week Wes Craven’s SCREAM 4 hits theaters. Not surprisingly, there aren’t any competitors in the genre opening the same day, so hopefully you’ll be here next week reading that the anticipated sequel debuted at #1.
