HOP may have had the highest grossing weekend of the year so far, but things weren’t too shabby for the genre at the box office this weekend either. Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE took the #2 spot with $15.1 million. That’s a mediocre start when compared to the other sci-fi thrillers in theaters, perhaps due to the convoluted plot, but it’s better than nothing.
James Wan’s INSIDIOUS came in #3 with $13.5 million. Not too shabby when you consider that the flick was made for only $800,000, played 2,408 theaters and was the first release by distributor FilmDistrict. Perhaps this will open studios’ minds to more original horror content.
Neil Burger’s LIMITLESS remainder fairly strong, claiming the #5 spot with $9.4 million. The same can’t be said for Zach Snyder’s SUCKER PUNCH, which dropped to #7 from #2. It made $6.1 million, a 68% decrease in its second week.
Greg Mottola’s PAUL came in at #9 with $4.3 million, and Jonathan Liebesman’s BATTLE: LOS ANGELES was right behind it with $3.5 million. Outside the Top 10, we had George Nolfi’s THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU at #11 with $2.2 million and Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD at #12 with $1.8 million. In its limited release, James Gunn’s SUPER pulled in $52,800 at 28 theaters.
There won’t be much going on next weekend for genre fans, as wide releases include YOUR HIGHNESS, ARTHUR, HANNA and SOUL SURFER. That means you can check out INSIDIOUS or SOURCE CODE if you haven’t yet. Hopefully those two flicks will gain legs with word-of-mouth.
