Jonathan Liebesman’s BATTLE: LOS ANGELES invaded the top spot at the box office this weekend, with an opening of about $36 million. It was far from the best opening for an alien flick, naturally, but it’s not too shabby either.
Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD opened at #3 with $14.1 million. It fared a little better than last week’s BEASTLY (which fell from #3 to #7) and was above average for a werewolf movie. However, it did not come close to pulling in TWILIGHT numbers, which was obviously its intentions.
George Nolfi’s THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU dropped from #2 to #4 with $11.5 million. Jaume Collet-Serra’s UNKNOWN and DJ Caruso’s I AM NUMBER FOUR fell out of the Top 10, landing at #11 and #12, respectively. Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN is still pulling in some cash near the end of its theatrical run, making another $455,000 at #18. Patrick Lussier’s DRIVE ANGRY continues to suffer, coming it at #21 in its third week.
Next week looks like a no brainer: Greg Mottola ‘s PAUL will likely take the top spot. The anticipated sci-fi/adventure/comedy stars Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and the voice of Seth Rogen. Also opening is Neil Burger’s LIMITLESS, an action/thriller with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, and Brad Furman’s THE LINCOLN LAYWER, a thriller starring Matthew McConaughey.
