We’ve been following the big-screen adaptation of AKIRA for about a year and a half now. Over that span, we’ve seen writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus (IRON MAN, CHILDREN OF MEN) attached to the project, as well as the Hughes brothers (BOOK OF ELI), Morgan Freeman, Zac Efron and James Franco. Strangely, every casting tidbit mentioned turned out to be premature. Hopefully the following news actually holds…
Variety has it that HARRY POTTER scribe Steve Kloves has been officially tapped to polish the AKIRA adaptation for Warner Bros. He’ll pick up where Albert Torres (HENRY POOLE IS HERE) left off.
Kloves has written seven of eight POTTER flicks, and obviously has a knack for a striking a chord in a massive audience. Question is, is he too broad to bring the cult-coolness of AKIRA to proper fruition?
Of course, a lot of the success will come down to casting, which the studio has yet to begin. They haven’t set a release date for the flick yet either, though an early IMDB page has it slated for 2013.
