According to a press prelease jointly issued by Paramount and IMAX, the J.J. Abrams-directed alien adventure SUPER 8 and Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS: THE DARK OF THE MOON will both release in the IMAX format when they’re released on JUNE 10 and JULY 1, respectively. Additionally, the Abrams-produced MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4 and the Steven Spielberg-Peter Jackson collaboration THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN will also get the IMAX treatment. (It should be noted that Spielberg is listed as producer on SUPER 8 and TRANSFORMERS 3 as well.)

TRANSFORMERS 3 isn’t necessarily a surprise, as some of the film was shot in 3D and the first sequel, REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, shot certain sequences in IMAX. But I definitely didn’t picture SUPER 8 being suitable for the format. Maybe I’m underestimating the scope of that movie.

“Paramount Pictures consistently delivers top-quality, highly
entertaining films that audiences love to see in IMAX, and with these
new titles, we believe our 2011 lineup is on its way to becoming the
most robust slate we’ve ever had,”
said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond.

I don’t know how a TRANSFORMERS movie looks on an IMAX screen; the first one was dizzying enough on a regular screen, I’d have to imagine in IMAX – and 3D – that you’re brain is likely to explode thanks to Bay’s disorienting style.
