We regret to inform you of the death of Spanish filmmaker Juan Piquer Simón. He passed away after a long battle with lung cancer at the age of 74.
Simón is best known for the 1982 cult classic PIECES. Much of his career was dedicated to the genre, with other titles in his filmography including SLUGS: THE MOVIE, THE POD PEOPLE, THE RIFT, and MYSTERY ON MONSTER ISLAND. He ran his own studio and often created and/or designed the special effects for his films.
There’s isn’t too much information about the man’s life available, but there’s a nice little documentary featurette about him entitled “Pieces of Juan” on the PIECES DVD. If you haven’t seen it, you can pick up the DVD HERE.
Our hearts go out to Simón’s family, friends, and fans. May he rest in peace.
