Countless year-end lists are rolling in, but we’ve learned some exciting news about one horror classic that joins a list of all-time greats. 1973’s THE EXORCIST has been added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.
Frankly, I’m surprised it has taken this long, but better late than never! William Friedkin’s classic tale of possession, adapted from William Peter Blatty’s novel and screenplay, undeniably made an impact on cinema.
Also on this years list was THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. They join an esteemed list of inductees which also includes such genre titles as PSYCHO, ALIEN, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, KING KONG, and THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD. Read the full list here.
The National Film Registry was formed in 1989. The public annually nominates films that are ten years old and “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Of those nominees, the Library of Congress selects 25 films to be preserved.
