Anyone who has seen the just-released HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS was surely struck by the eerie, gothic animated sequence in the middle of the film; I know I was. Explaining the origin of the flick’s mysterious “deathly hallows”, the short sequence plays like a Grimm’s Fairy Tale, and it’s certainly one of the movie’s most compelling and unusual touches. Obviously, the man in charge of said sequence, Switzerland’s Ben Hibon, has made an impression with this small sample, as he’s just been given an entire film to direct.
Called PAN, it’s a dark spin on the Peter Pan tale. The film has Captain Hook as a haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper.
Not necessarily sold on the concept, but with Hibard immediately proving himself an intriguing talent to watch, I’m on board. And it’s also worth noting that Guillermo del Toro was once attached to helm the project for New Line Cinema.
Hibon’s previous animation directing credits include the short “Codehunters,” which premiered at the 2006 MTV Asia Awards and has been shown at more than 50 film festivals, as well as the videogames “Heavenly Sword” and “Killer 7.”
