Next summer is so incredibly packed with potential blockbusters that it’s no wonder it has taken so long for Paramount to plant SUPER 8 in a firm location. Every weekend has at least one major movie coming out, so SUPER 8 had to eventually commit to its summer plans, or move onto the fall. Not a good look for a movie with this prestige, so it has settled into a JUNE 10, 2011 date.

That date is already occupied by Universal’s FAST FIVE, starring – of course – Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and The Rock. Before you scoff, realize that the last FURIOUS movie made in the neighborhood of $70 million in its opening weekend, so its fanbase is quite large. The weekend before sees X-MEN: FIRST CLASS come out, and the weekend after SUPER 8’s debut will bring THE GREEN LANTERN into the fold. So lots of big competition for the mysterious adventure, which deals with an alien encounter of some kind.

Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills and AJ Michalka all star in the film. Let’s hope a full trailer is just around the corner…
