The last update we got on the upcoming R.I.P.D. adaptation came back in August, when we learned that McG had passed on the project with Robert Schwentke looking like he was getting ready to snatch the gig up. Well folks today we’ve got confirmation for you!

You see, over at Variety they just released the news that Schwentke will indeed be directing the comic adaptation! He’ll be directing a screenplay by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, which in turn is based on Peter Lenkov’s Dark Horse comic of the same name. Want the skinny on R.I.P.D.? Check it:

Two cops, one recently dead and a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years, work on the Rest In Peace Department – which is the police department of the dead. And they basically…it takes place on a normal day and it’s about trying to keep the dead quiet.

Universal had already tapped Ryan Reynolds to star in the flick though it’s unknown who’ll be playing the other starring role. What do you guys think? You down for Schwentke tackling this one? Who would you like to see star opposite Reynolds? Hit us with your opinions on the whole she-bang below and keep it here for more on R.I.P.D. as we hear it!

I wonder if Reynolds will be able to convince his wife Scarlett Johansson to co-star with him in R.I.P.D. … Hmmm …
