It seems like it’s been forever since we last heard about that XOMBIE live-adaptation in the works, doesn’t it? Well maybe that’s because it has been forever! Our last update actually came way back in September 2009! That’s too damn long for a project to be swimming around in limbo.
Well thankfully today ends our drought regarding XOMBIE news… Actually let’s not get to excited. While today’s update does have a bit of news regarding the project, it’s nothing to write home about. You see the guys over at Bloody-Disgusting got a chance to chat it up with the producing duo of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci at this year’s Saturn Awards. In the midst of discussing several other projects BD were able to get a question regarding XOMBIE in there. So what did the producers have to offer? Check it:
“We have set our targets on a writer who we really like who’s got a great take on it, and that’s a matter of going in and pitching it over to our friends at the studio and having them pay the guy. If you read the comic, there is something unique about it terms of the fact that the zombie in a sense is a protagonist in it. And the idea of finding a humanity [in a zombie] is the opposite of any kind of zombie movie that we’ve ever seen and that’s what attracted us to it…I think it’ll be [set in] present day. So think of it as not un-fun, but I think there’s a grittiness to the comic that we wanna preserve…but I don’t wanna commit our writer to too much until he actually writes it.”
So let me get this straight… They’ve got a writer all picked up, but the guy hasn’t even started writing it nor has he gotten the thumbs up from the studio. Are we even talking about Will Beall, who penned a script for XOMBIE last year? Like I said folks… not much of an update. But it is nice to see at least a little movement on the project.
The question of whether XOMBIE has franchise potential was also brought up in which the producers replied: “We never look at anything [that way]…never count your sequels before they hatch. One movie at a time.” Right guys… Like I’m sure you had no idea STAR TREK would warrent a sequel…
The feature is based on a series of flash animations about a zombie cop named Dirge who attempts to saves humanity’s remnants, particularly a young girl named Zoe, from evil zombies. Sounds fun right? So what’s taking this shite so long? We’ll be on the lookout for more XOMBIE updates so be sure to keep it here for more on the project as we hear it!
