Yes, Robert Rodriguez has found himself attached to yet another project. While he’s certainly one of the hardest working men in movies, it always seems like he should be working even harder considering all the titles he claims to be getting off the ground. (Although I must admit I’m kind of glad that it doesn’t look like THE JETSONS is happening.) While his next directorial effort appears to be SPY KIDS 4 (why?), Rodriguez has just unleashed the news that he’s got even bigger things in the pipeline: a live-action version of FIRE & ICE, based on the 1983 Ralph Bakshi film. (Ironically I mentioned this movie last week in the Frank Franzetta obit.)
The synopsis, via IMDB, goes like this: In this animated tale, a tiny village is destroyed by a surging glacier, which serves as the deadly domain for the evil Ice Lord, Nekron. The only survivor is a young warrior, Larn, who vows to avenge this act of destruction. The evil continues, however, as Nekron’s palace of ice heads straight towards Fire Keep, the great fortress ruled by the good King Jarol. When Jarol’s beautiful daughter, Teegra, is abducted by Nekron’s sub-human ape-like creatures, Larn begins a daring search for her.
Here’s what Rodriguez told Harry Knowles over at AintItCoolNews: “The awesome Ralph Bakshi and I have been working it out for a while, and it’s now a TROUBLEMAKER STUDIOS PICTURE. What’s cool is, unlike past projects that I’d get involved with that would get stalled for various reasons, I control the rights to this one. So it’s actually in my power to set it up and get it made, which wasn’t the case on other projects. And for you filmmakers out there, that’s really the best way to get things done. If you can manage to get the rights yourself to a property by dealing directly with the artists and creators like I did with Frank Miller on SIN CITY, and now with Ralph Bakshi on FIRE and ICE, it makes a world of difference and you can get started sooner rather than never.”
Rodriguez also goes on to say that there will indeed by “sub-humans and pterodactyl-riding barbarians” in the picture, so you’ve got to get on board with that, even though the rest sounds like the usual sword and sorcery hokum. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if this is something Rodriguez really gets around to making…
