The only really big movie to hit this past weekend was CLASH OF THE TITANS, so it’s really no surprise the film hit the number one spot at the box office. But what is surprising is that it’s take of an estimated $61.4M equaled the highest numbers to hit Easter weekend… ever!
Not only did CLASH break the Easter weekend numbers, but it landed in a close second as the highest April opening ever, beat out by about $9M by last year’s FAST & FURIOUS. Which just goes to show you that in April, big, loud, and mostly dumb (but in a good way) movies are what people are craving for after a bleak winter of a string borefests.
For those wondering how much the extra 3D ticket prices contributed to its take, wonder no further: about 52% of all that cash was from 3D screens. Will the numbers for the weekend been as high if the film was only in 2D? It looks like the easy answer is no… it wouldn’t have. It’d be high… but not that high. So I guess it was a smart move to release the film in 3D, even if the 3D blew assholes.
Speaking of crappy 3D movies, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is also still taking in a buttload of money, hitting the number 5 spot with around $8M. The film has now made close to $310M domestically…
