Documentaries about our beloved genre are awesome. Are they not? Horror documentaries give us a chance to see what’s going on behind the scenes of some of our favorite films. Forgive me if I’m being a little overzealous but I recently got the chance to check out HIS NAME WAS JASON and dug that shite. So when news comes in today on two other genre documentaries heading our way you bet your ass I’m going to tell you about them!
The two documentaries are AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE and NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE AND BLUE. Ready for the details? You see Gravitas Ventures have just announced a deal with Lux Digital Pictures Inc. to bring the two films to Video-On-Demand this June! First up we’ve got AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE:
American Grindhouse is a feature-length documentary that explores the hidden history of the American Exploitation Film. The movie digs deep into this often overlooked category of U.S. cinema and unearths the shameless and occasionally shocking origins of this popular entertainment. Exploitation Cinema has left an indelible mark on American culture, and this informative and amusing documentary proves that its principles – and popularity – endure to this day.
Alright not so much horror as the f*cked up flicks from the 70s but we’ll roll with it! Exploitation is fun right? Or perhaps you’d be more interested in NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE AND BLUE?
Nightmares has recently been featured at a number of noteworthy international film festivals, including Deauville, Sitges and Athens. It’s based upon the book by the same title by Joseph Maddrey and tells the story of the evolution and history of the American horror film through interviews with prominent filmmakers, historian, film critics and others including John Carpenter, Joe Dante, George Romero, Wes Craven, Darren Lynn Bousman, Roger Corman among lots more. It’s even been plugged by Fangoria as “… the best documentary of its kind in years!”
