It took James Cameron’s AVATAR only 14 days to reach $367 Million, making it the second highest grossing movie of 2009. Yeah you heard that right… It only took Cameron’s latest epic two weeks to reach what countless movies aimed for all year. And when you couple that with it’s overseas numbers and the 2010 totals thus far it’s safe to assume AVATAR is gearing up to be the second highest grossing movie of all time, behind another Cameron movie about a boat or something…
So it’s very safe to assume a sequel to AVATAR is on the way, right? Right. That shite was confirmed today over at Ain’t It Cool News! Here’s the skinny:
Don’t know if this is newsworthy, but I just saw a Variety Screening Series showing of Avatar at the Arclight theater in Hollywood tonight, followed with a Q&A with James Cameron and two of his visual effects artists. One of the artists mentioned that they’ll never again do this for the first time, meaning that everything they did in the making of Avatar was just a lot of instinctive grasping in the dark. Cameron agreed with him. He also told him to expect the studio to want another one, as they’d passed the billion $ mark. A second film will be easier, as the technology now exists, thanks to the movie. The moderator asked if there *would* be an Avatar sequel. To which Cameron answered that the plan had always been to make a trilogy of films. Finally, Cameron actually said it: “Yes, there’ll be another.”
Whoa didn’t see that coming. Oh wait… yeah we did. A whole trilogy of films though? That’s pretty intriguing. Now obviously I’m in the minority here but I have yet to see AVATAR… Don’t hate me but it’s just not catching my interest, even after all this hype. Perhaps it warrents a viewing in IMAX and/or 3D if just for the experience… We’ll see. Here’s hoping AVATAR 2 doesn’t take another 10 years to develop though.
