Crazy Gun novel bought

I don’t know if this really “fits” in with the rest of the stuff we report on, but it sounds so utterly weird that I’ve got to give it a brief mention. At the very least, it appears as though it was written by someone on acid. And we appreciate that.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the producers of the new BAD LIEUTENANT movie have optioned the rights to Jonathan Lethem’s sci-fi noir novel GUN, WITH OCCASIONAL MUSIC. What’s it about? Oh, the usual…

The novel follows the adventures of Conrad Metcalf, a tough guy private detective and a wiseass, through a futuristic version of San Francisco and Oakland, California. Metcalf is hired by a man who claims that he’s being framed for the murder of a prominent urologist. Metcalf quickly discovers that nobody wants the case solved: not the victim’s ex-wife, not the police, and certainly not the gun-toting kangaroo who works for the local mafia boss.

Yes, a kangaroo is the villain of the piece. The story also apparently involves super-smart children called “baby-heads,” evolved animals (such as kittens, apes, and the kangaroo mentioned above), “erotic nerve swapping”, and debit cards that hold one’s karma.

Like I said… acid. Flick doesn’t have anyone else attached at the moment, but we’ll let you know as soon as that changes.
